So yesterday I went to the dental hospital and now need to adjust to a brace. Since then I have had physio (more painful than the accident or the injury), been to the allotment and planted cabbages and onions (and been cornered by an allotment-holder who told me uz lads didn't know we were born, ee'd taken all iz own teeth out wi pliers), and am now making a cake (or rather the bread machine is making it for me). Tonight is the writers group and having missed my last two reading slots I'm hoping to take over one that has been vacated (I certainly put forward my claim to it but did say that there are new members who might like to read instead). I do have something to read after all.

And having locked myself out of my own Flickr account (though I can access it as a visitor and so can download my own pictures that I don't have on the MacBook) I am trying Fotki for new photos. It isn't so much that setting up a new Flickr account would be too easy it's that it's owned by Yahoo and my Yahoo accounts are locked hence the being locked out of Flickr.

Had a dream in which I turned up in an expensive club as a passenger in a Mercedes Benz but was asked to leave, however the 'doorman' (a very tall young man) once outside was sympathetic and said the management had some odd views sometimes.

As I have now been told off for using the internet too much (read: at all) for non-work purposes at work, I may be posting and reading less.
Though I shall hopefully not need to justify my use of several non-official pages on Friday while looking for a solution to a problem in Excel (and which led to me using Visual Basic for the first time ever).

Today I have been for A Walk - from Richmond to Putney Bridge, along the river, which was very pleasant. 8 mi / 13km. Lunch on a bench at Strand on the Green after a WC / juice stop at the Express Tavern. Weather was fine and bright - just perfect despite being a bit cold. Passing Hammersmith I could almost see the flats where I used to live - something's been demolished along the riverside just past Riverside Studios - the yellowish buildings on the right of this picture. The area now looks like this.
As with the cycling, when I do actually get up and go walking I really enjoy it. Nice people too.

I have now not had a drink for three weeks - I am hoping to go for the month, of which the last day will be 16 December, though this week might be problematic, not least because I have a conflict of interests - Thursday is a CAMRA branch meeting, but is also the office party and the Silver Wiz are on at the Fiddler's Elbow. During their last gig I was sitting there drinking lemonade and lime which was £3.70 a pint.
An odd side effect of going out but drinking soft drinks is that I go to bed later because I am sober when I get back home. Still feel tired occasionally in the afternoons and the recent cold didn't help, but that may be dehydration or a lack of a lunch break, whereas I always used to go outside at lunchtime I haven't been recently. Must Do So. I am still looking for another job but am not 100% clear what I actually want - technical work, people seem to assume, but why? My degree is in modern languages and I've been a TEFL teacher among other things.

New camera

The Pentax K10D has arrived - a lot of stuff in the box including 18-55mm lens, manuals, recharger, etc. but the camera itself is very neat and this weekend I should get the opportunity to take some pictures. Having been used to a 'point and shoot' camera - though my current one has quite a bit of user-control available - the DSLR looks a lot more complex and there are all sorts of buttons and switches and dials on it. It has 10 megapixels which is adequate for me - but then the current spec always is adequate and a year later you can always want more! It's the third SLR I've owned - had a Praktica MTL5 which my dad gave me but I didn't use much and finally conked out, then an Olympus OM-10 (not sure what happened to that. Possibly sold it to the secondhand camera shop in Hammersmith). First digital one though.

Back to work today despite intermittent coughing. Spent some of the morning wandering about on the roof of the building - 12 floors up and no rail, just a kind of track to walk on. Like some of my nightmares. All this so we could take some photographs. Spalding Gray once said "The camera eroticises the space" - well not enough! I have taken to carrying the little Ixus in my bag fulltime, and the Pentax is on order.
However today I did get the results of my PRINCE2 Practitioner exam - I passed. So I can now manage projects, I suppose.
Home feels cosy by comparison with going back to work - despite mice. Have written a 200-word piece for the last class on Thursday - Mary Ward finish the term early to make up for a lack of a half term. This evokes fond memories of my dad's first car: I don't really remember it, but I've seen the pictures and its loveable specification including no 0-60mph time because that was pretty much top whack.

Anyone have experience of the Pentax K10D? I've decided that as I seem to be inexperienced in using proper cameras i.e. SLRs I should have one, and not just rely on the point-and-shoot Ixus - which I'll now keep in my bag so as not to have to take pictures with the mobile phone!

You see the picture accompanying this article on the BBC London site?
I took that, I did.
